Farm History
Stonepitts Farm has been growing soft fruit for over 60 years and are one of the oldest established Pick Your Own farms in Kent. We are proud to offer several varieties of Strawberries, Raspberries and Tayberries to pick your own throughout June until early August.
Our strawberries are traditionally grown, outside and on straw, which not only protects the fruit but also enhances the flavour.
We have six varieties of Strawberries and three varieties of Raspberries.
Strawberries:
Florence
The most exciting introduction in recent years. Florence combines lateness of season with a high yield of attractive fruit.
Cambridge Favourite This is an old favourite as its name suggests - a vigorous running habit makes it an easily grown variety that crops very well under a wide range of conditions. The orange coloured fruit is of medium size and hangs well on the plant with a superb sweet taste. The Cambridge Favourite goes back to the '60s and is a superb and highly popular variety.
Christine
This is an early and really tasty variety with large bright orange-red berries, high skin strength, a great flavour with good sugar levels for jam and general eating.
Eros
Eros was delivered from a cross between Elsanta and Allstar, made in 1985 by Dr David Simpson and Judi Bell and released to fruit farms in 1994 The berries are very attractive with a firm and regular conical shape, mid-red colour and glossy skin with a pleasant, well-balanced flavour.
Malling Centenary
This variety has a wonderful rich and deep flavour and tends to be early in the season. The berries have a regular size and have a lovely high gloss. Malling Centenary is the 1st ever strawberry to be shortlisted for the RHS Chelsea Flower show, plant of the year.
Malling Allure
This variety compliments the Malling Centenary, by matching it’s fruit quality but fruiting about 2 weeks later in the season. Malling Allure produce large berries which are lighter in colour.
Raspberries:
Glen Ample
An exceptional mid-season variety producing exceptional yields of firm fruit and establishing new standard raspberry growing. It produces large fleshy fruits which are round-conical in shape, attractive and with an excellent flavour.
Tulameen
A top raspberry variety for quality in combining outstanding fruit quality and excellent yield, originally bred in British Columbia from a Glen Prosen cross. Tulameen produces very attractive, bright, glossy fruit with a distinct conical shape and excellent flavour plus along shelf live.
Cascade Delight
Originally bred in the USA, the fruit appears late in the season and is usually larger than our other varieties. They have a firm but glossy flesh which means they last well after they have been picked.
Tayberry
The Tayberry was bred from a cross between the blackberry Aurora, a high quality variety bred in Oregon, USA and an improved Tetraploid Raspberry. The berries are large, long conical shape and a reddish purple colour with excellent, slightly aromatic flavour. Excellent quality for freezing, canning, jams, and jellies.
Educational Visits For Primary Schools
We offer educational visits to local schools to provide knowledge about how strawberries are grown traditionally and the general operations of a working farm.
The children are able to sample different varieties and pick for themselves a punnet to take home.
We have found this has been a highly successful initiative over the last few years. If you are interested in booking for next season, please email us.
